Rees Skillern Cancer Institute

advanced cancer care to heal the whole person

The Rees Skillern Cancer Institute at Memorial is the leading provider of cancer services in the Chattanooga area. Our comprehensive program includes seven centers of excellence, each dedicated to a specific type of cancer and supported by interdisciplinary tumor boards, clinical trials and advanced technologies, such as the the da Vinci® robot for the minimally invasive treatment of prostate and some colorectal cancers. All in a healing atmosphere that gets you back to the life you love…and the people you inspire by living it.

Advanced Radiation Oncology

At Memorial, we have the most up to date cancer treatment machines in the industry. We have the True Beam STX, Novalis TX, and the Siemen’s primus linear accelerators. These machines use radiation to treat the patient’s tumor. The True Beam machine is the most advanced and performs many forms of radiotherapy. These include intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and image guided radiotherapy (IGRT). IMRT is a treatment technique where doctors are able to customize your radiation dose by varying (or modulating) the amount of radiation that is sent to different parts of your tumor. IGRT uses advanced imaging so doctors and clinicians can visualize your tumor. This allows them to verify the exact position of the tumor and treat it precisely each day.

The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center of Excellence

Opened in 2007, this comprehensive breast center offers mammography screening, a dedicated breast MRI, ultrasound and stereotactic diagnostics, bone density, cancer risk counseling, community outreach and a wide array of support services for women’s breast health and breast cancer needs. Memorial's Mobile Health Coach brings mammography and health education out to the workplace and rural communities.

The Joe and Virginia Schmissrauter Centers for Cancer Support

Memorial's Centers for Cancer Support offer a variety of support services, educational classes and support groups for patients and families on both hospital campuses. The multidisciplinary staff includes an oncology nurse educator, chaplain, clinical social worker and clinical dietitian.
